Project partners:
• Romania: River Administration for Lower Danube – Galati (AFDJ)
• Bulgaria: Executive Agency for the Study and Maintenance of the Danube River (EAEMDR)
• Bulgaria: Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC)
Total project budget: €229,999,786
Budget for AFDJ: € 118 168 365
Budget for EAEMDR: € 111 213 416
Budget for MTC: € 618 005
Financing rate: 85% (ERDF)
The project is implemented through the following work packages (WPs):
WP 1 – project management, communication and dissemination
WP 2 – design of works
WP 3 – execution of works (including dredging activities)
WP 4 – supervision and management of works
WP 5 – environmental monitoring
FAST Danube 2 main objectives:
The main objectives of the project include improving navigation conditions, removing navigational blockages, ensuring year-round navigation and increasing connectivity between points of the TEN-T network. The project is in line with the EU strategies for achieving zero emissions, mobility and increasing the use of sustainable modes of transport. The main objective of the FAST DANUBE 2 project is to implement engineering solutions to improve navigation conditions in the common Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube River and ensure the parameters of the fairway for a minimum period of 340 days/year, and increase transport connectivity in the TEN-T network.
The project consists of design and execution of works in 12 critical areas along the preidentified Danube section, accompanied by supervision and environmental monitoring services in accordance with the requirements of the Environment Protection responsible bodies.
The project includes the following activities to improve the conditions of the fairway:
o Dredging works in 12 critical areas (total 110 km);
o Bank stabilization in 3 critical areas (total 5.45 km);
o Groynes for limiting the movement of sediments in 3 critical areas (Belene, Beket, Popina – 2.6 km in total);
o Chevrons to modify the hydraulic flow and sediment response of the river, at 3 critical locations (Belene, Beket, Popina – 1.9 km);
o Artificial island to modify the hydraulic flow and sediment response of the river along the intended sector (Belene - 1.2 million cubic meters).
