Bulgaria and Romania with joint action plan

Publish on 13.02.2023

On 9th and 10th of February, the 69-th session of the Joint Bulgarian-Romanian Commission for maintenance and improvement of the fairway on the Danube took place in Guirgiu, Romania. The Commission was established in 1955 under an agreement between the two countries and convenes twice a year. The managers and experts of the Danube authorities involved in the river’s regime exploration and the maintenance the fairway – Executive Agency for exploration and maintenance of the Danube River – Ruse, Bulgaria and River Administration of Lower Danube – Galati, Romania (R.A. Administratia Fluviala a Dunarii de Jos Galati) take part in the work of Commission.

During the last meeting the hydrological and navigational conditions in 2022, when low water level caused many problems for navigation in the common Bulgarian-Romanian section of the river, were discussed and analyzed. The representatives of both administrations jointly planned the actions to be taken in 2023 to ensure safe navigation, taking into account the need to secure minimum fairway parameters. Both countries prepared a Joint action plan, which includes range of activities – hydrographical measurements, fairway marking with floating and coastal signalization, carrying out dredging works in critical areas. The two administrations agreed to exchange information on a daily basis and to plan their work in case of low water levels or a tendency for such. The necessary forces and means to carry out the planned activities (crews, vessels, specialized equipment and facilities) are available in both administrations. They are financially secured and ready to start work immediately when needed.
