70 YEARS TOGETHER FOR THE DANUBE RIVER

Publish on 01.04.2026

With a symbolic green initiative, the Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River marked today its 70th anniversary. Exactly on this date, April 1 – no joke – the Agency was established by a decision of the Council of Ministers, with its main mission being the care of the Danube River waterway.

Today, 70 years later, the Agency’s team set a symbolic new beginning by planting three plane trees on the Ruse riverside promenade. The location was not chosen by chance – it is emblematic for the city, beloved by its residents and a natural link between the river and the Agency’s work.

The choice of plane trees also carries a strong message. They are a symbol of resilience and longevity – qualities that reflect the institution, which for seven decades has fulfilled its key role in ensuring the navigability of the Danube River.

"Today’s date is not only an occasion for reflection but also an investment in the future. With every tree planted, we leave our mark – both in nature and as an example of responsibility to future generations," said the Executive Director of EAEMDR, Ivelin Zanev.

The initiatives dedicated to the Agency’s 70th anniversary will continue throughout 2026.

The Executive Agency for Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River was officially established on April 1, 1956. On this date, by Decree No. 84 of the Council of Ministers, the "Navigation Waterway Administration" was reorganized into the "Administration for Maintenance of the Navigational Waterway and Exploration of the Danube River," headquartered in the city of Ruse, directly on the riverbank.

Over the years, the Agency has established itself as an active body within the Ministry of Transport and Communications, successfully fulfilling Bulgaria’s international obligations for maintaining the navigational waterway and conducting studies of the Danube River.
