EAEMDR Provides Open Access to Hydrological Data for the Danube River

Publish on 03.04.2026

The Executive Agency "Exploration and Maintenance of the Danube River" (EAEMDR) has taken another important step toward greater transparency, scientific development, and sustainable water resource management. As of recent days, the Agency now provides free access to primary hydrological data for the Danube River. The river is not only a strategic waterway but also a sensitive ecosystem whose condition reflects climate changes – from extreme droughts and low water levels to sudden high waters and floods.

Access to high-quality data is essential for better understanding these processes and for developing effective adaptive measures. The Agency plays a key role in this process through the systematic collection, processing, and provision of hydrometric information. It ensures a reliable database that supports not only the day-to-day management of navigation and maintenance of the fairway, but also long-term scientific research related to climate change, flood risk management and the sustainable use of water resources.

The hydrological data are published on the Agency’s official website: https://www.appd-bg.org/pages-en?id=opendata and are available in a machine-readable format. This allows their direct use by all stakeholders for analysis, modeling and forecasting. In the context of the increasing impact of climate change, the role of reliable and timely hydrological data is becoming more crucial than ever.

In addition, the published information will help improve coordination between institutions, stimulate innovation and encourage the development of the scientific community. Free access to reliable information is a key factor in decision-making at both national and international levels and is an important tool in the efforts to adapt to climate change and preserve the Danube River for future generations.

At present, the Agency has published historical primary data from hydrometric stations at Novo Selo, Lom, Oryahovo, Svishtov, Ruse and Silistra. The information includes average daily values for water levels, discharge and water temperature for the period between 2020 and 2025, with annual updates planned.

In the coming weeks EAEMDR will expand the scope of the platform by gradually adding new datasets.
