DANSER project - DANube SEdiment Restoration
The DANSER project is a multidisciplinary initiative focused on the restoration and sustainable management of sediments across the Danube River Basin. The project addresses the pressing challenges caused by climate change and human impact, aiming to restore sediment balance, enhance sediment flow, and improve the quality of water and sediments within the ecosystem. It combines cutting-edge technologies such as sediment transport modelling, geophysical surveys, and nature-based solutions for biodiversity enhancement.
EU MISSION "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030"
The project is part of the "Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030" Mission which aims to improve the health of our oceans, seas, and inland waters. The Danube-Black Sea is one of the area-based ‘lighthouses’ in major sea and river basins where the Mission operates to ensure implementation across Europe and beyond. These lighthouses serve as living labs for demonstrating, deploying, and scaling up solutions.
APPROACH
DANSER employs a comprehensive, multi-layer approach that combines expertise in sediment studies, modeling, and nature-based solutions (NBS) to assess natural and human-induced impacts. The project focuses on historical reconstruction, hydrotechnical interventions, and monitoring tools to improve biodiversity, ecosystem services, and local community engagement.
KEY ACTIVITIES
• spatio-temporal mapping of natural and anthropogenic processes
• Sediment transport modelling and historical pollution analysis
• Geophysical surveys and 3D historical reconstructions.
• Development of a digital portal for monitoring and decision-making tools
• Public engagement through participatory tools, including Sediment Café workshops and citizen science initiatives
PARTNERS
The DANSER brings together 35 partners, including 7 associated partners, from 7 different European countries – Portugal, Romania, Croatia, Austria, Ukraine, Bulgaria, and Ireland – in a joint effort to tackle critical challenges in sustainable sediment management and the protection of the Danube’s ecosystems. Project coordinator is Danube Delta National Research and Development Institute (DDNI).
DURATION
48 monts - January 1, 2025 – December 31, 2028
